With a context of southern wind and mist coastal precinct, a family entrusted and approached for a place of living at Thikkodi, Kozhikode. Every individual built their home with lots of imagination and sense of belongingness.
A 16 cents site and 3400 sq.ft built form unified with scattered vegetation of coconut and palm trees. The task was to design a form that has to be outstanding sculpture and unique tangible expression of materiality, fluctuating scales, transforming spectrums of light and a set of warm and vital color palette.Needs an open plan, with minimum of wall connections, with plenty of light and ventilation
says client.
The design curated from the concept of connecting built and unbuilt spaces by adding and subtracting modules and plugging in with greenish lush vegetation inside and outside the built form. The project internal zoning, requirements of four bedrooms with attached washrooms, space of gathering, living and dining space, kitchen and the essential spaces started with creating the whole built form as two "bars" of activity zones on basis of functions and movement of user groups.
With a sense of fascinated entry welcomed by the built form reflects the greyish texture of "Krishna shila" rubbles as the show off façade at the front elevation entwined with elements of green foliage openings and letting of sun raises in. The outside verandah, connected with car porch as single slab with no beam structure creates very open and dilatable space. The screen on the edge plays hide & seek with metallic longitudinal L-sectional and circular rods that separates the link with backyard of the site while simultaneously projecting a minimalistic exterior. The entry to inside with a set of steps opens to outside verandah flourished with green elements falling from cutout at the shading slab which internally opens up to an arrival volume filled with tropical strains.
A semi double height space, the long southern "bar" designed for stimulating interactions among family members and spaces which functions like that of a living and dining area, an internal courtyard way to the G+1 level in a mass volume. All the hidden spaces of functional spaces are replete transformed again to functional space, the wash area and a storage area in addition. In the mass geometry, the volume gets a break within since levels are created which again used as seating space simultaneously carries to the next level with breathable narrow box stairs blanketed with concrete huge wall one side and the other side designed with openings gifting pattern of natural light inside.
The northern "bar", houses a very private functions of the design scheme, a master bedroom and a guest room attached with washrooms, in between plugged indoor landscape spills as a lush verandah setup. In the same floor, the kitchen, storage space and a work area connected horizontally minimizing the separating wall in a schematic way. G+1 of the same "bar" also occupied with bedrooms opened from an internal verandah with a level difference to the entry of space. The long internal verandah leads to the balcony space which acts as the auxiliary recreational space flooded with cool coastal ambience from the Thikkodi shores. Each bedroom and furniture has been curated with minimal wooden design exploration maintaining a unifying "tropical-traditional" modernism.
